St James's Park c.1910

St James's Park c.1910

St.James Park was the first royal park to be opened to the public
in 17th century.

It used to be a fashionable promenade for the London high society
throughout its history, with the exception of a period in the 18th century
when it was a recognized haunt of whores.

The Park was lit by gas in 1822, and various improvements made later
on, including re-modelling of the lake and planting of new trees. It
became how we know it today - romantic curves, winding paths and
plenty of shrubberies
.

The view on this photograph is walking along the lake known
as the Canal towards the Whitehall complex of government buildings which
you can see in the distance.
