Bank Square. Bank of England and Royal Exchange c.1912.

Bank Square. Bank of England and Royal Exchange c.1912.

Here it is, the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, as the Bank
was nicknamed in 1797- it is the long building on the left. This is
where Britains gold reserve is stored, in the vaults hidden
among the three underground stories ...

Next to it is the Royal Exchange. The Exchange itself existed
here between 1570 and 1939, when it became too small and separate exchanges
were set up elsewhere. The steps leading up to the majestic Corinthian
columns were just right for important state announcements, like
the proclamation of new sovereigns and declarations of war.
