Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge nearby is very young compared with the castle
- it was constructed in 1894. Its twin towers (cast iron, stone clad)
used to house the hydraulic mechanism for lifting the Bridge.
Now it is done electrically, ant the towers house the Tower Bridge
Museum
, illustrating the design of the bridge and its mechanism
and offering superb views of London.

All steel for the Tower Bridge came from Scotland. It
was erected by Sir William Arrol and Co. of Glasgow, who also were the
contractors for the Forth Bridge. A firm from Paisley did much
of the ornamental ironwork.

Both sections of the suspension bridge weigh over 1,000 tonnes each
and can be raised in under two minutes. To
