Westminster Abbey c.1912

Westminster Abbey c.1912

The official name of Westminster Abbey is the Collegiate Church of
St.Peter at Westminster
. It has the status of a royal peculiar,
- directly responsible to the crown. There has been a small community
of Bendictian monks on this spot as early as 785 AD. Many monarchs
contributed to the construction of the Abbey since then.

The western towers that you can see on the picture are the latest
addition to the Abbey. They are sometimes said to have been designed
by Sir Christopher Wren, but they were actually built by Nicholas Hawksmoor
and John James and completed about 1745.

The Abbey is crowded with tombs of and memorials to
many famous Britons - how many of these do you know? - Sir Isaac
Newton, David Livingstone, Ernest Rutherford. Geoffrey Chaucer, Ben
Jonson (who was buried upright), John Dryden, Robert Browning
